A 77 Year-Old St. Lucian's Story

“The lack of security against dangerous criminals has filled St Lucians with a terrible fear. All over the island people are walking in fear of their lives. The fear of attacks from unknown quarters will make St Lucians take the law into their own hands and this is the beginning of anarchy in an island that was renowned for its peace, tranquility and friendly people. I feel a terrible sadness for the loss of the St Lucia that we all used to love.” - St. Lucia STAR quotes a 77 year-old long-time resident of St. Lucia

June 27, 2006

Shortly after the attack on us, a 77 year old long-time resident of Saint Lucia was attacked at her home.  Neighbors and the woman’s daughter stopped the attacker and handed him over to the police.  He was charged with attempted rape and murder.  The St. Lucia STAR reported her story.

Two weeks later after a court appearance, the police LET THE RAPE SUSPECT ESCAPE! According to the Saint Lucia STAR, “the prisoners were unattended; just out there (outside the police station) while the officers argued amongst themselves. The man accused of attempted rape just calmly walked away.”

Now, on an island of only 160,000 people how hard is it to find the attacker again?  In the same article the Saint Lucia STAR reports:

“By now there should be an island-wide search.  There is no sign of it.  By now his picture should be posted on television and all over the news. It is not. By now our security officials should have made a statement. They have not. Last Friday evening a man accused of attempted rape and attempted murder walked out of the Central Police Station.” The St. Lucia STAR reported this on July 12, 2006.
